An Indianapolis Police officer is facing felony charges after allegedly forging a prescription for painkillers.
IPD officer Mark Kuykendall was arrested at 4:45 Monday evening at a CVS pharmacy on the south side of Indianapolis. Police confirm the pain was from some surgeries that came after he was injured on duty.
Officer Kuykendall is an eight year veteran of IPD. Now he faces felony charges, accused of altering a valid prescription for Valium.
"My understanding is this is the first time," Major Lloyd Crowe with IPD said. He was arrested at the CVS located at 3705 Kentucky Ave. after handing the prescription to the pharmacist. What alerted the clerk was heavy ink, "Something in the writing of the prescription caught the pharmacists attention," Major Crowe said.
Patrolman Kuykendall has been off duty because of several surgeries in the last two months.
"One of the issues is this particular officer has been dealing with some pain issues obviously. In recent months he's had surgery on both of his knees, on both left and right shoulder and a tumor removed from his foot," Major Crowe explained.
Some of the surgeries were due to on duty injuries. "So we do know he was dealing with some pain issues. It does not make this allegation ok," Major Crowe said.
The Marion County Sheriff's Department will investigate along with IPD's internal affairs. Officer Kuykendall is facing a C felony for forgery and D felony for prescription offense. He could be placed on administrative leave or suspended pending a full investigation.
