Mazero allegedly stole prescription medicine for more than a year while working at the Kmart Pharmacy from January 2005 to February 2006, police said.
Kmart Pharmacy employees and management became suspicious of transactions being made by Mazero in February and notified the federal Drug Enforcement Administration about their concerns, police said.
The Philadelphia DEA office, the Pennsylvania attorney general, the Burlington County, N.J., Drug Task Force and the Lower Pottsgrove Police Department conducted a cooperative investigation leading to charges against Mazero.
"The investigation revealed Mazero was diverting various controlled substances from the pharmacy for personal gain," Foltz stated in a written release.
Mazero used her position at the pharmacy to create fraudulent prescriptions from various physicians and under various patient names, police said. She then filled the prescriptions and made it appear on record as if the drugs were disbursed to legitimate customers, police said.
Over 13 months, Mazero diverted 287 separate prescriptions from the pharmacy consisting mostly of Alprazolam (a generic brand of Xanax used to treat anxiety disorder), Hydrocodone (a generic name form of Vicodin used for pain relief), Diazepam (a generic brand of Valium used to relieve acute anxiety) and Phenergen with Codeine cough syrup (used to relieve allergy symptoms), according to police.
Mazero paid cash for most of the fraudulently obtained prescriptions, but also submitted several claims through insurance providers for reimbursement, police said.
The investigation remains open as authorities continue to investigate other persons who may have been involved in the scheme, police said.
Mazero was charged with fraudulent acquisition, possession and possession with intent to deliver controlled substances; violations of the Pharmacy Act; insurance fraud; criminal use of communications facility; and criminal conspiracy, police said.
Mazero was arraigned before District Judge John Durkin, who set bail at $10,000. It could not be determined over the holiday weekend whether Mazero posted bail and is free to await further court action.
A preliminary hearing before Durkin is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Thursday in his Lower Pottsgrove courtroom.
